Artist Statement

Inspired by Fluxus art, our project aims to create a space where the audience becomes the artist in the fashion of Fluxus scores. Fluxus scores were created to reimagine the boundaries and disciplines of art, creating meaning through individual and subjective means. With a combination of plywood and cardstock to create a modular tree, each audience member can create a new version of the same art piece with a personal meaning. By focusing on a tree, which is a form of growing nature, the piece creates a sense of parallel magnification of conceptual ideas into a physical entity. While the piece grows into a tree, the meaning behind the tree also grows.

My Contributions

During this group project, I was mainly the leader. I feel like I had the clearest idea of what we were doing.

  • made the first draft of our schema (the one with the blue background)
  • in charge of the designs and decisions of the group
    • sketched sample leaves
    • worked with Gaby to find a font for the letters
    • made basic branch shapes as examples
    • worked with Audrey to create branch shapes
  • modeled and laser cuted test pieces to find the best slit width for our pieces
  • went to Michael's by myself and bought the cardstock used for the leaves, the boxes, and the green felt to represent the grass floor
  • made the final schema
Reflection

Overall, the project was fun to do. However, it was a little difficult because we couldn't use the laser cutter outside of class time. I also felt like group communication was a little difficult because everyone is busy and free at different times. I think having more in-class work time would have helped.
