Questions

1. From the podcast, how has our understanding of what dinosaurs really look like evolved? Describe the progression of how we portrayed them and how might this effect our understanding of what Archeology is saying about them.
Paleontologists assumed that dinosaurs were big, unintelligent, and dumb. They thought dinosaurs were more closely related to reptiles. However, Bob Bakker proved them wrong. After is group dug up the fossils of creatures similar to raptors. Based on this discovery, dinosaurs were then thought to be fast and bird-like, instead of big and slow. Since the raptors were found next to each other, it could indicate that they lived in herds or communities. Because of the similarity to birds, dinosaurs could have been warm-blooded, agile creatures. However, Bakker's discovery was blocked from popular media and society continues to think of dinosaurs as slow and unintelligent.

2. The artist/archcologist John Conway who is doing interpretaions of dinosaurs is obviously taking liberty with what could be the actual truth of how these creatures existed. What other fields of science, creative based disciplines and forms of studies use similer techniques that reminds you of this method or process. Please elaborate with your examples both written as well as images and links.
One interpretated science is biology. Whenever I'm in a biology class, I am constantly looking at video simulations of a function or exploring the different parts of a cell with drawings. It is hard to actually show images of a cell while still making everything clear enough to see. By using interpretaions of cells, we are able to learn about them.
Another discipline that reminds me of John Conway's method of interpretation is Chemistry. I took Adavanced Placement in Chemstry during high school and I do not remember ever seeing a photo of an actual atom. We had physical models and simple drawings with circles and lines to show bonds.

3. First, summarize in your own words the defination of 'Material Speculation' as described in the second and fourth article. Then, given the examples in the second article as well as the other examples provided of possible future products, how can 'Material Speculation' also be used to create speculative objects that refer to the past? What might be an example of a fictional object form the past, that creates the same dynamic of speculation.
Material speculation is the speculation of artifacts and how it looks and feels, from a different world. It could be from a different time period, like the past or the future, or an entirely different world. This could be an existing fake world, like Pokemon, or it can be an imaginery world in someone's head.

4. "In a world ..." Brainstorming
Part I

Each person in the group is to create Three suppositions or hypotheses. Using the words "In a world..." or simply "If...." fill in the blank.

As each supposition is shared, then let the rest of the group consider what the outcomes might be. Everyone in the group is to participate in making a speculative statement that would be a response to the supposition. The response might be a predictive statement or something that finishes the idea started by the supposition. It can be strange, silly, dark, etc. Nothing is too weird. As you go, write down the suppositions and responses in your shared document.

You should do each supposition (culture, lifeform, technology) where each student can make a supposition as well as the group responses. Also, the person making a supposition should make a response as well.
